As told by Chris Harris from Story Church, Tulsa OK

“When’s it gonna happen?!” I asked.

A Slow Start

My partner in crime, Josh Adsit—19 years my junior—just smiled. While I spent 32 years waving my arms in front of high school marching bands, Josh has spent most of his life in ministry. Now, we’re planting STORYchurch in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Five months post-launch, I found myself restless. We’d been pouring into the neighborhood—bringing donuts to local teachers, serving dinner at parent-teacher nights, and providing childcare for women in recovery. We were being present, listening, showing up. Still, I kept wondering: When are the people in this neighborhood going to show up on Sunday?

A Surprising Blessing

Over spring break, my daughter and I flew to Portland to hike waterfalls and visit the coast—but also to meet with fellow church planters and friends like Sean Thomé. While we were there, sharing stories of the slow, beautiful work of planting churches, I got a text from Josh: “The Vines family of 6 just walked in the door at STORYchurch.” Their youngest son, a 6th grader on the track and cross-country team Josh and I coach, was there with them. They haven’t missed a Sunday since. I realized Jesus had been at work all along—quietly, faithfully—through every donut, conversation, and shared moment in our community.

Mustard Seed Partners

This is why we’re inviting 25 new people to become Mustard Seed Partners in 2025. Your monthly gift of $25, $50, or $100 helps encourage pastors, train disciples, and plant churches—so more people like the Vines family can encounter Jesus. And we believe that an encounter with Jesus changes everything. Even the smallest acts of generosity can grow into something incredible.

Will you be one of the 25?
